Trichothecenes: The Black Mold Toxin Family

Trichothecenes are a large family of mycotoxins produced by Stachybotrys, Fusarium, Trichoderma and several other genera. They are the group most often meant when people talk about "black mold toxins", because Stachybotrys chartarum — the species usually called black mold — produces a subgroup of them known as satratoxins.

The family, not a single compound

Trichothecene is a category rather than one chemical. It covers well over a hundred compounds sharing a common core structure, conventionally sorted into types A through D. The ones that come up in indoor environments and in agriculture include T-2 toxin, deoxynivalenol (widely known as vomitoxin, a Fusarium product found in grain) and the satratoxins from Stachybotrys.

They are potent protein synthesis inhibitors, which is the mechanism most of the laboratory literature concerns.

The black mold connection

Stachybotrys chartarum needs sustained wetness and a cellulose-rich substrate, which in practice means water-damaged drywall paper, cardboard, ceiling tile and wood that stayed wet for days rather than hours. It is not the most common indoor mold; it is the one most associated with genuine, prolonged water intrusion.

Two things worth separating. Colour is not identification — plenty of dark molds are not Stachybotrys, and only testing tells you the species. And presence of the species does not confirm toxin production, which varies with substrate and conditions.

On health claims

Trichothecenes attract stronger claims in both directions than almost any other mycotoxin. The laboratory toxicology is real and well documented. What low-level environmental exposure produces in people is genuinely contested, and both the alarmist and the dismissive positions overstate what the evidence supports.

What is not contested

The building science is settled enough to act on: certain molds produce these compounds, the compounds persist on surfaces and in contents after the organism is removed, and standard remediation is not designed to clear them.

Removal

Trichothecenes are chemically stable and are not addressed by bleaching. The workable routes are physical removal by HEPA vacuum and thorough surface cleaning, molecular breakdown by enzymatic treatment of surfaces and contents — the stage MycotoxinKlear is formulated for — and disposal of porous material that grew mold internally.

Because Stachybotrys growth means material stayed wet for an extended period, that material usually comes out rather than being treated in place. Treatment is for what the colony left across the rest of the building.

Yes, the same way as other species: fix the water, remove colonized porous material, clean what remains.
