The short answer: nothing kills black mold on walls permanently while the wall is still getting wet. Once the moisture is fixed, the goal is removing the organic material rather than killing it — dead mold still stains, still holds mycotoxins and still triggers reactions. On painted or sealed walls that is a cleaning job. On drywall that is colonized through to the back, the board comes out.
"Kills" is the wrong target
Almost everyone searches for what kills mold, and it points at the wrong outcome.
Dead mold is still there. The staining remains, the spores remain, the mycotoxins the colony produced remain, and people sensitive to mold react to dead mold. A product can be genuinely excellent at killing and still leave your wall contaminated.
What you want is removal — the organic material broken down and taken away, not sterilized in place.
First: is it on the wall or in it?
This decides everything that follows.
Surface growth sits on paint or sealed plaster. Typical in bathrooms and on cold exterior walls where condensation forms. The substrate underneath is sound. This is a cleaning job.
Colonized drywall means growth has gone into the paper facing and the gypsum core. Signs: staining that returns in the same outline after cleaning, drywall that feels soft or crumbles at a screwdriver point, a musty smell stronger than the visible growth explains, and bubbling paint.
Colonized drywall cannot be cleaned. No surface treatment reaches the back of the board. It gets removed, under containment, and that is contractor work.
What actually works on surface growth
Enzyme cleaners. They break the organic material apart at the molecular level, so the staining goes because the material causing it is gone. What does not work
Bleach. Mostly water. On porous surfaces the water soaks in while the chlorine stays near the top, so you lighten the visible stain while feeding moisture to the material underneath. It also adds chlorine to the air of a room where someone may already be reacting.

Fragrance-based odor products. Change what the room smells like and nothing else.
Doing it properly
- Fix the water. Everything below is temporary until this is done.
- Contain and ventilate. Even a small area releases spores when disturbed. Close doors, open a window, wear an N95.
- HEPA vacuum first, before wetting anything. Removes loose material rather than smearing it.
- Apply and dwell. Enzymes need contact time. Wetting and immediately wiping wastes the product.
- Wipe, do not scrub hard. Aggressive scrubbing on drywall damages the paper facing and drives material in.
- Dry fully, with airflow.
- Check in two weeks. Return in the same outline means either the moisture is still active or the material is colonized internally.
About "black mold" specifically
The phrase usually means Stachybotrys chartarum, but plenty of harmless species are also dark, and colour is not a reliable identifier. Only testing tells you the species.
